Robert Bondar Marina

We are practicing social isolation at Roberta Bondar Municipal Marina. It is in Sault Ste Marie. “The Soo” is located in the centre of the North America and at the confluence of 3 of the Great Lakes: Superior, Michigan and Huon. It has long been a meeting place important for commerce.

It’s importance is evident in the 2 sets of locks here. The Canadian canal, once the world’s longest, completed the 3,500 waterway from the Atlantic to the western end of Lake Superior in 1895. These locks are still functioning and are used by pleasure boats to enter Lake Superior. Commercial traffic use the American locks.

Since we have been here a steady stream of lakers and tugs have moved up and down river. They announce their arrival and negotiate passing each other using their horns as upbound and downbound ships meet in the channel opposite where we are moored.

The Roberta Bondar Pavillion is just to our west. It is an outdoor venue which gives a design nod to the first nations that congregated here millennia before European’s arrived. We are in the Roberta Bonder Marina which is a beautiful facility run by the municipality. The docks are all new with aluminium and plastic decking.

We are all alone as the marina is not officially open.

No loud parties and no neighbours to bother.
