The Mississippi caught my imagination in elementary school when my parents read us “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn“ and “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”. More recently, I re-read “Life on the Mississippi “ an autobiographical account of Samuel Clemens’ time as a river boat pilot.
So here we are: mile zero on the Illinois River and mile 216 on the Mississippi River. Upstream is Hannibal, Clemens home town. Downstream is St Louis and the world beyond.
