Tensaw River Anchorage

Another beautiful spot to anchor. The Tensaw river splits off from the Mobile River. There is no tow traffic and the Tensaw channel bends away from the Mobile so the shore acts like a breakwater. Wakes from tows passing by won’t disturb our sleep. Also, the current flow will keep us straight without a stern anchor.

There were three other boats here when we pulled in, all laying in the same direction. We checked with the first boat to find out where their anchor was and how much rode they had out.

We dropped anchor 300 metres upstream of our neighbour and like them we used 100 feet of chain. The channel is 20 ft deep so no need to worry about tidal changes. I did check though to start practicing this new and important navigation skill. High tide at 4:30 am was 2.2 ft above mean low water.

Some reviews said this anchorage has a place to get dogs to shore. However, the only suitable place was a boat ramp 2 kilometres upriver. Given our dinghy’s top speed of 8 kilometres an hour, the lateness of the hour, and a temperature of 2 degrees, we decided that the dogs would have to use the astro-turf on the bow.

Other than a gentle grinding of the chain, we didn’t hear a thing all night. No heater cycling on and off, no creaks or groans from a dock or squeaks from the fenders. Only gentle snores from all aboard as we curled up in our down duvets and the dogs in their winter coats.

One good outcome from this trip on the rivers is a new preference for anchoring. Even the dogs like it – if they can get to shore.

  1. This sounds so lovely. In our earlier boating days we loved anchoring in so many parts of Georgian Bay…up the Moon River for example. We found many safe spots and a few rock walls to tie up to. Miss those days and you are helping me relive that time. Your photos are great.💕

  2. We are thinking about spending summers in Georgian Bay when we finish this trip as we didn’t spend as much time exploring as we cold have.
