Glad to Have 2,400 km Behind Us

The first day was an uneventful run from Ottawa to just south of Cincinnati. I was able to do some car birding along the way. Red-tailed hawks lined the I-90 south of lakes Ontario and Erie. Often one bird perched every 500 metres and obviously hunting along the interstate.  A bald eagle surveying the traffic going by was probably the most beautiful one we have seen all summer. Likely because eagles molt through the summer and fall so the ones we saw were a little scruffy looking. I also spotted an owl nest that looked to have one sitting already.

The New York Thruway section of the I-90 is a toll road. We knew this but didn’t realize that they have gone digital since we were last here. We tried texting the number advertised and it didn’t recognize our area code. We tried filling in the on-line form, but again the system didn’t seem to like our Canadian postal code, nor did it like the billing address for the Florida plate on the rental. Oh well, we tried.

Day two was a somewhat different story. We left our lovely accommodations at the Red Roof Inn – we will really have to order those service animal vests – in a rain storm.  It rained heavily on and off all day as we drove to Montgomery, Alabama. The evening news said between 3-5” fell. We believe it was likely 5 inches. The Tennessee River looked quite different from when we boated on it a couple of months ago. The back channels are full and the wetlands bursting.

The rain finished with cracking good thunderstorms and tornado warnings overnight in Montgomery. Apparently a small tornado passed north of our hotel – a Hotel 6 which was much more acceptable – blowing down some trees and causing minor damage.

Dawn brought bright sunshine as we headed off on the final leg to Orange Beach.
