From Fort Walton to Panama City is 70 miles or so. Too long a day for us. An anchorage named Fluffy Landing near the Choctawhatchee Bay Bridge looked interesting but across the bay was another anchorage near a boat launch where we could get the dogs to shore. Plus, there was a causeway half way the bay under the bridge that would block winds from just about any direction.
The boat launch was lovely. Four ramps at different angles, fishing piers, cleaning stations, tables, washrooms and paved parking lots. It was even well lit at night so we did a post-sunset run to shore with the dogs.
Note to self: put navigation lights for the dinghy on the to-do list
We anchored close to the ramps to minimize the length of the trip to shore. There was a little traffic noise but nothing like Chattanooga. Livin’n Life anchored further away and the noise was barely noticeable on their boat. Dinner was beans and weiners – easy prep and clean-up.
Our plans for a nine o’clock departure were frustrated by our windless. It retrieved 90% of the chain, then stopped when some weight went on it. Hmmm, head scratching. Drop some chain, raise some chain repeatedly in hopes things would change.
Well things did change. The gypsy stopped working completely – nothing in or out. The windless motor ran but the gypsy that hauls in the chain wouldn’t spin.
More head scratching. In the end, a tiny pull with the boat broke the anchor free and then John could lift it by hand. We were both glad I didn’t choose the 50 kilo model when I ordered a new anchor. We secured the anchor on deck, glad to be released from the ocean floor and a feeling of helplessness. Thanks to Rob and Doris for standing by while we sorted ourselves out.
Other than a half hour delay, there were no repercussions. No disappointment or frustration. It just means the next thing on our maintenance list will be attended to sooner rather than later.
