Time and Tide

We are slowly internalizing the effects of tide. Each time we step on and off the boat is a reminder. We must make sure to correctly gauge the distance, and height ( higher or lower); accounting for distortion from the bifocals. Misjudging can have consequences. Especially with an armful of dog.

Some docks can be quite challenging. The tides in the Panhandle run about 1.5 feet. So fixed docks are possible -just. We are seeing fixed docks that are 3-6 feet above the mean low water level (MLW). So one criteria when looking for a slip is whether a floating dock is available. They are few and far between in this part of Florida.

The pilings also complicate matters. They are on the outside of the dock so the gap between the gunwales and the dock is generally 1.5 to 2 feet. It is a good thing we have ball fenders. The cylinders we frequently use are packed away until further notice.

We are currently dock at a fixed dock and scramble over the railing at mid-ship. Then step up several feet to get off the boat.

I wait for John to help me get the dogs off.
