Open Water

It has been awhile since we’ve had such a big horizon. We just popped out on the Neuse River across from Oriental NC. The river joins the Pamlico River forming a huge sound that extends 60 miles to Cape Hatteras. A couple of the boats we met recently are heading out to gunk-hole (anchor out) along the outer banks.

This is a sailors’ haven. The water is shallow and generally has late day breezes. That means this is another place to watch the weather.

We were planning on staying in Oriental tonight but the winds tomorrow would make for a “sporty” run. So keeping in mind that discretion is the better part of valour we choose to head for R.E. Mayo Seafood Co docks for the night. Not only is the slip rate good at $0.40 a foot, but shrimp is $6.75 a pound. Scallops are frozen so we got a pound to go for $18.

On top of that diesel was only $3.69 per gallon so we topped up. A great stop.

  1. Eating fresh seafood has to be the best ever! We have lost the good weather here to rain today…so it’s book and banking work to do. Slowly getting into a new pace. Keep on trucking…🛥🛥🛥
