Poseiden’s Wrath

It had to catch us with us eventually. Unusual winds and storms have been reported along the east coast of Florida. Heavy rain and tornadoes have been raking the Gulf coast in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and the mid-western states. We have dodged long periods of bad weather for the most part. And, if I do say so myself, I have gotten better at finding marina’s that are protected from impending storms.

However, we got a look at a period of strong winds and rain when we were in Solomon Island. Forecasts started showing small craft warnings every day in the week up coming. We were booked into Annapolis Maryland City Marina for the weekend. One, so we could drop our barometer off at Weems and Plath for repair. And, two so we could explore the city from a sheltered location. However, the front moving through was large and would see the winds clock or veer around all points of the compass daily. I started worrying that we would not be protected enough.

Some diligent research turned up several possibilities in Rock Hall Maryland on the eastern shore several miles north of Annapolis. I selected the one with the most protection, cancelled our reservation in Annapolis and we headed to Haven Harbour. This marina also has time to do an oil change for us – after the weekend.

We arrived during the calm before the storm and got the boat organized, picked up a few provisions, had a long walk around town before settling down to dinner when the skies opened. Two and half inches of rain thoroughly rinsed the boat and flooded the parking lot. Poor Rocco (and me) got drenched every time we went out. We kept congratulating ourselves on coming here. Even though large trees were visibly swaying and the rigging on the sailboats surrounding us were singing, the water in the marina was calm.

We discussed taking our barometer to Annapolis over breakfast and started searching for transportation. Not many options for rental cars turned up but during the search we realized that we were only eight hours from home. The forecasts agreed that we would likely be tied to this dock for at least a week. So, why not head home.

We left the next morning and were climbing into to a stationary bed by evening. We had missed a favourite looper stop in Coinjock, NC where there is a restaurant known for their prime rib. So we treated ourselves at home.
