Can’t shake South Carolina

This post is a bit of a reach back to when we were in South Carolina. Something keeps resurfacing and I didn’t quite know what to say about it. It started when we pulled into Georgetown Landing SC after leaving Charleston SC. The dock hand there said “nice hat”. I said thanks I got it at the market in Charleston. He said ‘Oh, you mean the slave market”.

I was a little taken aback because although I think I knew that’s what those buildings were for, I was surprised that this is the first thing a local would comment about. But, come to mention it there was almost no signage or monuments to the over 150,000 slaves that passed through Charleston, nearly 40% of the total slave trade. Might be a bummer for the tourists I guess.

Now here is the weird part and its what keeps coming back to me. On the day we were there the market was full of tourists that just got off a cruise liner.

Thousands of people arrive by boat and go to the market to support the economy of Charleston. Is that irony or is it just me?

  1. John, I appreciate your post about the Slaves passing through…I would have a tough time shaking it as well. An acknowledgment of all those human beings passed through as a commodity in the past would be profound 👍🏻🙏🏻
